It's not as 'deep' as Civ, but the Heroes of Might and Magic series sucked up hundreds of my gaming hours. 1 is pretty light, 2 adds more to the game, but III with the Shadow of Death expansion is my favorite. Just the right balance of turn-based strategy combat and resource management, complete with hundreds of different types of creature and dozens of characters.
I didn't like IV that much, it changed too many of the core features of the series and wasn't as fun or accessible, but maybe i'll give it another try.
I think there's some sort of Collectors Edition now that collects HoMM III and its two expansions in one package.

Mybe try a c&c pack? you can get tiberian sun, firestorm and some others in a pack for about £10-£20, its a classic rts and if u have a half decent net connexion then u can play online for hours of fun.
Maybe if u are looking for an "adventure" game, u should try an RTS like Boulders gate. That has hundreds upon hundreds of hours playtime, also try morrowind for a fps rpg.

How about World of Warcraft?
For strategy games... I would recommend sticking with real time strategy. If you do not have Starcraft or Warcraft 3 you have some serious gaming issues! Pick those up ASAP and enjoy.

If by adventure, you mean graphic, point-and-click adventure games, I highly recommend Grim Fandango.

try consider 'Guild Wars' maybe? Ive played it once before and i have to admit that it does exceptionally well to quench ur thirst for a good game, let alone a rpg :p . One bad thing about it is that it does get a little boring after a long day of playing it, so u should have a few other games as well on the side, but that shouldnt b a problem at all. As you build up, then things will get more interesting of course. and its free onlineplay :). I HIGHLY recommend it!

Guild wars is... ok
I really didn't like it but I have plenty of friends that are really fanatical about it. It is kindof a cross between world of warcraft and diablo II as far as I know.
You might want to give it a look. :)

kinda like an adventure game but more like an interactive movie, indigo prophecy is a REALLY awesome experience...might not be what you are looking for (lots of replay value - 100's of hours), but it's a really good game warranting at least 1 or 2 playthroughs

I also want to recommend Baulder's Gate... alot of people didn't like it... but I really thought it was a great game. A little bit like Diablo II with more of an RPGish theme.

Runescape is a great game it's free for non-members. It's great for action, quests, adventure, strategy, but not the best graphics. You should try it. I should warn you it gets boring when you're a level 54.

Baldur's Gate is really good, and its huge, also, if you run some DOS emu, (DOSbox advised) there is no end of old, turn based strategies and RPGs out there for cheap or free, my personal favorites would be either the old Ultima games (VII is best) or for strategy Master of Magic (80%Civilization, 20% Magic: The Gathering)
