i have the following:

Pentium 4 3.20ghz
Nvidia 8500GT (512MB)
2GB RAM
160GB hard disc

i can just about play some older games on medium-high settings, but the framerate is not very good on newer games. i'm not too bothered right now coz i have the 360 to keep me occupied.

until i get a decently paid job of my own, i won't bother trying to get a better PC to play a few good PC games. it's not worth it imo unless you've a lot of money to spend on yourself.

mine are:

AMD Athlon 64x2 dual core 6000+ 3.00GHz
3 GB RAM
windows vista home premium 64bit
Gigabyte technology´s Motherboard with nforce 430i chip

sorry, you're right. i have the 8500GT not 8600GT. i doubt the 8600GT is more powerful than the xbox 360 or ps3. the 8800GT being more powerful is feasible, but not 8600GT

seriously search on google: "8600gt vs 360" or "8600gt vs ps3" there are tons of forum sites and stuff saying that its more powerfull, plus on games like COD4 for pc i get better graphics with my 8600gt than my friend gets with his ps3

would there be any point of me upgrading to an 8800GT with the following specs i currently have?

Pentium 4 3.20ghz
2GB RAM
305W PSU
geforce 8500GT

the games i currently play on PC are BF2 and BF2142. i'd like to play Crysis, but with the other specs i have, i know just a graphics upgrade won't be enough. i can get an average of about 40 frames per sec on the lowest settings in 1024*768 or whatever on BF2 in 64 player games.

my bday is coming up soon and my parents usually get me something i want. there's no xbox 360 games that i want atm, so do you think a graphics upgrade will be worth it? or should i wait til i get a new PC altogether.

i'm not PC tech savvy so i'm not gona bother trying to change any other parts of my PC other than the grpahics card.

I'd recommend getting a new processor. I used to have a Core 2 Quad @ 2.4Ghz, 2GB RAM, and a single 8600 GTS and I got playable framerates on medium settings with Crysis. An 8800 would probably only be worth getting with at least a dual core CPU, and that, I'm guessing, would boost playable framerates to... very playable, I suppose :P. Without a multi core CPU, your computer would stumble with Crysis I'm afraid.

With a new multi core processor, that would be a pretty fine computer really.

Quote from Flameboy=you overclocked it by *a gigabyte*! thats over 70% in your case. sure it hasnt melted yet?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

its been working fine for over a year at that speed with no problems, i had it higher (3.1Ghz but it sometimes crashed on more intensive games)

I never use standard cooling fans either, i think the fan on it is called an "artic pro" cpu heat is a stable 40-50 degrees dependant on load.

guess i just got lucky with that chip :p

if I rember rightly i clocked the FSB to 440MHz

flameboy118
07-19-2008, 09:17 PM
fair enough.. yeah how much a chip will overclock is luck, often say a 2.4ghz processor and a 2.8 one are the same chip, set at different speeds, so they would overclock to the same speed.

@punkster il save it for the shoutbox, but an 8800gt on that would give you a decent fps on high on crysis if you comprimised BIG on resolution. and if your definiton of a decent framerate is around 10 fps. in all honestly, each part is as bad as the last- it all needs changing or nothing needs changing, if you see wharimean. that said, most of a games power comes from graphics. course you could get leave the cpu if you dont mind loading screens, get another 2gb of ram (but make it 800mhz) and give yourself 4 gig ram total (some fast some slow), then upgrade to a 500W reliable PSU then get another 8500gt and run it in sli, or just buy one 8800GT

thats completely and utterly pointless, i trusted you man!:p

and punkster its p!ss easy to upgrade the psu, which you would definitely need to do for an 8800gt. maybe the best thing for you is to get an 8600gt, if other stuff is out of the budget. you probably wouldn't need to upgrade your psu then, and despite what people say, its a great card, i've decided to delay my hardware upgrade because theres nothing it cant handle pretty well.
bioshock 1024 by 768 completely maxed, great fps, completely playable, and holy smokes that game looks good.
crysis 1280 by 1024 no aa, all medium (cept maybe shaders), looks frigging amazing, 20 to 30 fps which is plenty for crysis seeing as its not very fast paced.
cod 4 1024 by 768 4aa everything else maxed, i get perfectly playable frame rates (havent measure them yet, i would estimate about 30-40) and thats on the demo, which is less well optimised.

i agree that getting two 8500GT's in SLI is quite pointless. you don't get double the performance as most people would hope for, instead you only get about 40% performance boost.

i'd rather for for the 8600GT coz it doesn't cost too much and i don't have a mobo that has two graphics card slots.

EDIT: scrap that, i've decided i want the 7950gt instead.

soon i will upgrade from 8500GT to 7950GT, and also from 305W PSU to 550W PSU. this will either be the best or worst decision i'll ever make with upgrading PC hardware.

there are numerous problems i'm hoping i won't run into: overheating, the new 550W (overkill, i know) PSU might not have the right amperage on the 12V rail or whatever.

on the PSU's product description, i just read 550W and Dell Dimension 5100 compatible and i'm crossing my fingers it'll be ok.

i have no idea how i'll mount a fan inside my PC to cool the GPU if it does run hot. is it ok to use sticky tape or improvise with other simple materials to mount a fan that'll blow directly onto the GPU? in fact, i haven't even checked if my mobo has anymore power sockets for extra fans.

if u have enough space, leave the case open and just use a normal fan, thats what i do, also turn your fan settings to max in the BIOS/ Rivatuner / ntune, etc....

haha, i was thinking of doing that. how much does it lower the temperature of your PC's components by specifically doing that? have you tested? also could you take a pic of it running like that and show us, just for the amusement.

you could always manually set your gpu fan speeds on your graphic card, i finally managed to get my fan speeds to manual, firstly i rewired my pc so theres virtually no wireing inside the main chamber and tightly tied them altogether so theres loads more space for free flowing air, imediatly my card temps dropped from 80c down to 70c, then i did a higher clock on the cards, gpu runs @ 900Mhz and memory clock @ 1200Mhz and i set the fans to 50% and my temps have now dropped to 40c on both cards.

how well do they perform in games. as in what framerates do you get in crysis if you put on all high settings.
