currently i have an XFX 8500GT card and i would like to get an 8600GT card. but i'm not sure which brand is best to get. i would like to get the cheapest one possible, but i'm not sure if this cheaper one is good or not.

this is the cheapest 8600GT i found on Amazon.co.uk http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xpertvision-512MB-GeForce-8600GT-Super/dp/B000XP8R84/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1216674093&sr=1-4

took a look at those specs, and that seems pretty good for the money. not a huge step up, and there are much better 8600s out there, but for 35 pounds...

I think you should reconsider getting a new graphics card right now. Save up your money and get something that is relatively current. 4850s aren't outrageously expensive and would beat the pants off just about anything of the 8800/9800 series for less money.

Also a word of advice about GPU brands. Ignore clock speeds when buying a card. "Super clocked" cards are always more expensive than their regularly clocked counterparts, both your Core and Memory clocks can be brought up to "Super clocked" levels with basic overclocking. The most important things to consider when buying graphics cards are:

How good is the warranty?
How good is the customer support?

If you plan to upgrade pretty soon after you get a card, then a great warranty might not be needed, especially if it can save you some money. Some companies (BFG for example) have lifetime warranties and great customer support, but their cards are typically very expensive.

i don't get why lots of people think the 4850 is so good? i've had a look at benchmark score, framerate tests and 4850 seems to be as good as 8800GT, but not a huge amount better. and they're about the same price on amazon.co.uk anyway.

that 8600gt isnt good, it only has ddr2 memory, you should definitely go for one with gddr3 and a 256 bit, because theres no point in having 512mb with only 128 bit.
i would like to say i'm passing on information experienced people gave me, i was told all that, not my opinion.

the whole new graphics card thing infuriates me.
i can play the most graphically challenging game ever on all medium and it looks and runs great! that means i can play any other game at high on 1024 by 768, WHY THE HELL DOES ANYONE NEED MORE THAN THAT??????
people say its a **** card, theyre so stupid!

and yeah 4850 is great bang for buck but why would anyone need to upgrade to it from like an 8800gt or 8800gts????

my 8600gt is: evga 128bit 256mb gddr3

i think you should go for this one, it also happens to be the exact same as mine:

or this one if you could afford it, faster memory clock (though i dunno how much difference that would make) and free company of heroes!

nah, i think i'll go for a 7950GT which i've seen for under £60 inclu delivery on the net. it's 7 series which means no DX10 but i'm only using XP so i don't think i'll need a DX10 card for quite a while.

from what i've read, the 7950GT is almost the same price as 8600GT but significantly better.

i'm not sure what you were ranting on about, but if you were ranting on about what i thought you were on about, then i agree.

i search for graphics tests of cards on youtube and you can never trust their reviews of cards. sometimes i think the people who upload the videos of their graphics card being tested are actually the makers of the card themselves, trying to get people to buy it.

so yeah, i aslo dislike people on the net who boast about getting really good performance with a crappy card when they're obviously lying.

i soppose if u plan on running games in Dx10 mode, the 8600gt would pwn the 7950, but in Dx9 the 7950 has the edge

not really. 7950GT can't even run DX10 anyway.

if you have one 8600GT and tried to play crysis in DX10, you wouldn't be able to play with playable framerates in very high settings. supposedly you have to have vista and DX10 to unlock the very high graphics settings, but i doubt you'd even get decent framerates on medium- high settings with one 8600GT

just coz 8600GT is a newer card, doesn't mean it's better than the older series.

from what i've read a 6800GT is actualy better than the crappy 8500GT! i'd consider 8600GT a low end card now, and a crappy one even at that when you search the net for better cards that are the same price.

EDIT:

actually how does your overclocked 8600GT perform in crysis or bf2142 if you play that?

the 8600gt crappy??? errrrm i dont think so,

XP dx9: everything on high except shaders and shadows (low) with no aa at 1280x1024 25fps
Vista dx10: everything on very high except shaders and shadows (low) no aa at 1280x768 25fps

i can even do a vid to prove it

really? i'm looking at the framerate comparison on this webpage http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/Graphics_Cards-Geforce_8800GT-Crysis-DX10,review-29779-9.html

and it says that 8600GT gets about 8 frames per sec on very high settings and 14 frames per sec on high settings.

hopefully you're right instead coz then it means the 7950GT should get even better performance. now i can't wait to get the 7950gt.

EDIT: but you do have shaders turned off which i've heard cripples the framerate the most, so it makes sense.

lol, basiclly i have a 8600GT and it fails at DX10 so dont expect anything pro... but... it does play games such as half-life2, counter-strike:source, battlefield 2142, C&C and so on very nicely with high framerates.

i got my 7950GT through the post just. Whoop whoop! But i have to wait for the new PSU first. can't wait to try it out. i hope i get a huge performance gain or i'll be quite disappointed.
