Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence - Playstation 2 (released 2006)

Stealth Action

The Metal Gear Solid series. To look back on its roots, the series inventing the stealth genre, doing things in game that you can't do in any other; the genius of Hideo Kojima behind every ineration. After Metal Gear Solid 2, people were just a slight bit disappointed about not being Solid Snake for the majority of the game. Not only does MGS3 fix this, but it makes it so cool, you will be hungry for more.

Metal Gear Solid 3 pits you as Naked Snake, known later in the game as Big Boss, the father of Solid Snake, and also the best soldier of all time. Since Solid is a clone, Naked Snake looks exactly the same as Solid (except for the trademark eye patch, which you get later in the game).

The story, the setting. Both are of the greatest quality in terms of gaming. The characters are well emphasized and named, and all are individually significant in one way or another, just as any other Metal Gear Solid game. The game is set in 1960's Cold War period, in jungle terrained Russia, and the settings change from lush jungles, military bases, and swamps. The story is well told through detailed cut scenes and numerous radio transmitions. Numerous boss fights also set the extreme quality and fun factor of the game, all taking place in different environments and never being the same.

The graphics and models are of great detail, and are up there with Final Fantasy XII in terms of excellence. You will find it hard to find a better looking game on Playstation 2 of that generation, let alone XBOX or Gamecube.

The sound is also of great quality, with great voice acting, and numerous sound effects, from a ammo clip hitting the ground, do a bird of prey in a tree.

The game also has extras such as online battle and camo downloads, monkey hunting, replaying the main game for extra items, and a VS boss setting.

Overall Meta Gear Solid 3 is one of the best games of its time, and if you have a PS2 or PS3 you should definitely pick it up, and you might as well while waiting for Metal Gear Solid 4 to come out. Games like this definitely don't come out every day, so stop reading, go out, and pick up a copy. You won't be disappointed.

Score : 10/10

It's essentially the same game though? I guess you would have scored Snake Eater 10/10 as well I hope??

nah 9, i have it 1 more because of the new camera angle, which really changes the experiance.

but yes it is pretty much the same game, no real gameplay has been tweaked

Whether resetting fractures, pitting yourself in an epic crab battle, or wading down a river of the dead, the variety is spectacular.
Although I've only played the Snake Eater Version, Subsistence sounds like it is worth the try.
Thanks for the review, it helped!

Best,

-Penny D

I think that MGS 3 is not mandatory to understand the story

This analysis was too short! In any moment you talked about the gameplay or the difference of this game with the previous "metal gears" games.

I mean, this is the first metal gear game who introduced the use of camouflage; depending on the environment, some camouflage could help more than other and some of them could totally screw you over! You could finally adjust the camera and the enemy artificial intelligence increased a lot;they could hear you approaching if you were not stealthy enough, while in previous games they could only hear you if you cause an explosion, shoot or if you stepped in metal!

Also, in this game you could feel hungry and get sick, so you need to collect food and medications!
