Metal Gear Solid - Playstation 1 (Released 1998)

Only few games generated as much hype as the original release of Metal Gear Solid on the Playstation back in 1998. In fact....1998 was a huge year for games, we had three HUGE titles released and they were : Resident Evil 2, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and of course this major Konami release, Metal Gear Solid.

So....was it worth the hype? Abso-flamin-lutely! This game is a masterpiece, and it brings a tear to one's eye its that good. The game, directed by Hideo Kojima, puts protaganist Solid Snake on a stealth mission to infiltrate a nuclear base which happens to be home to a terrorist organisation commanded by Liquid Snake. Your first mission is to rescue the DARPA chief, and then to stop the group from launching a nuclear missile.

You encounter many brilliant characters throughout, many whom you talk to over CODEC or on the base. The voice-acting is great, especially when you consider it against other videogames like Resident Evil, and you really get the feeling you are there on this cold place all alone, with assistance only over radio transmission. I'm of course not including the many enemies who you will face. These soldiers you must hide/avoid/distract/knock out/kill in your bid to complete the game. The choice is yours - you can sneak about, trying to avoid the soldiers vision, or you can go all guns blazing. I personally prefer a combination of the two!

Graphically, for its time, the game was stunning. No pre-rendered background, this game was built from scratch in 3D and was hugely impressive for its time on Playstation 1 hardware. It all added to the great atmosphere this game had in such abundance.

So in conclusion, I love this game, as many of you do already. The control system was great, hugely playable and engaging, the plot was rich and there are many twists on the way which no one could have expected coming, and once you complete it, you really don't mind playing it again, to achieve further scores. The only downside IS the difficulty - this game is not huge. I think I completed it first go within about 10 hours, and my second attempt was less than half that. Having said that, this is still one of the greatest games ever made.

Score : 9.5/10

All those with a Gamecube or Wii should try to hunt down the Gamecube remake of Metal Gear Solid aka Twin Snakes.

This is a great addition, has some new features, and of course is given the Gamecube lick of paint, so looks pretty nice (although has to be said, its not in the same league as the Resident Evil remake).
