I got the Holiday 2006 Pack with Half-Life: Source, Half-Life 2 (plus Lost Coast & Episode 1). Pretty stoked on going back and completing the whole story from beginning to end (yes I'm working on gettong Opposing Forces and Blue Shift), and I have a wicked new Dell XPS 710 to do it on.

Since I know my computer should be able to handle any game on the market with maxed-out video settings (as I have an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Quad Core Processor and a 768Mb Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX) I start off with Half-Life: Source and go to the video settings panel. As I start to mess around with the drop down boxes for Anistropic and Anti-Aliasing, I notice a strange thing: the asterisks that the game uses to recommend the settings best suited for your system are all at the lowest values. Anti-Aliasing tells me I should have it turned off, same with Anistropic, V-Sync, HDR...

I crank them up to max anyways, but alas, the game has no Anti-Aliasing happening even when I changed the settings. A similar thing happens when I Auto-Detect settings for Doom 3 and Quake 4: they get set to low or medium... Even when I manually change settings I can't get Doom 3 or Quake 4 up to the 16X Anti-Aliasing that is supposed to be supported by the 8800 GTX. But the Half-Life games aren't cooperating at all, I see aliasing all over the place when I know I shouldn't have to with this GPU!

I am actually able to play Oblivion at the max settings with no trouble whatsoever, game looks awesome and smooth as can be. But why the heck aren't these other games getting with it? Incidentally, I have all the latest drivers for my hardware installed, so everything should be good to go.

Sorry for the windedness, but any ideas or explanations?

What operating system are you running?

Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Actually, I found something out: the settings work up to 4X anti-aliasing and 8X anistropic for half-life. If I set them higher, the effects turn off altogether, which is why I was getting so confused...maybe the games have issues with the nVidia drivers and therefore don't function to the cards supported functions?
