Whilst browsing the crappy selection of NDS games available at my local shops (only found about 5 different games between 3 big stores!) I noticed the comparably tiny selection of PSP movies available. I'm in the UK, so maybe that's something to do with it. They didn't even seem to be very new movies, so it struck me that maybe they have a deal to release old movies first, as it would be cheaper. If you're in the US (or in fact anywhere less backward than the UK) I'd be interested in hearing what movies are available for the PSP, if there's a much wider selection than I've seen at this stage or not? Also, if US-imported PSP movies would work on a UK PSP.

AFAIK, UMD disks for the PSP, and the PSP itself, *are* region coded.
Your DVDs are what, region 2? Since ours are region 1, I imagine you'd run into the same problem with importing UMD disks as if you were to import regular DVD's. Of course, it's possible some of the 'underground community' has found a way around that.
I haven't looked too deeply at the UMD movie selection, but there is a pretty decent number of titles, both new and old, available on UMD. Amazon.com lists 168 titles, from Halloween, to Sin City, to Snatch, to a Family Guy/Stewie Griffin thing. The focus probably is on 'older' titles, but they are sneaking some new ones in there as well.

Considering they are Movies, I doubt this list is complete, but it's a good way to see what type of stuff is being released, Including upcoming releases.

I'm interested in getting a psp. I have a lot of movies on dvd and don't feel like purchasing all of them again on umd. Could you just watch a movie from the memory stick? I see lots of umd for sale, but there the same price as normal dvds

If you have a large DVD collection then there is no point whatsoever buying them again for the PSP although they do look amazing on the PSP's super high quality screen.
If you buy one now and register it online at www.yourpsp.com you will receive Spiderman 2 for free (I live in the UK so I don't know if this offer is available anywhere else).

The PSP comes with a 32mb memory card which is ok for small videos but if you want to store a whole movie you will have to buy something much bigger. I think the largest memory card that the PSP will recognise is 1gb but even this is probably too small to hold a full length movie.

I read in UK Gamesmaster magazine that the PSP itself isn't regionally coded and its the software manufacturers who decide if they regionally code their products or not so apparently you can buy games and movies from anywhere and they should work fine.
But on the box my PSP came in it does say that it is coded to region 2.

If you look at www.play.com they have a good selection of stuff for the PSP.

Movies are region coded, but they are trying to bring a workaround the region checking on the PSP's

Whats the point in regional coding anyway??

Why cant we watch movies or play games from anywhere in the world without having to modify our Consoles/DVD players??.

Marketing, basically. Normally and historically movies were released in theatres and on video/dvd at different times in the world, by different 'operating companies' [Sony Pictures America, Sony Pictures Japan, etc]. And this was a way to make sure a disk 'aimed' at one market, stayed in that market, and that dvd releases in one region, didn't mess up theatrical releases in another, for example.

it is coming out on DVD? that is pretty cool. I still would kindof prefer to get it for the PSP though...
