I would recommend Hidden & Dangerous 2: Sabre Squadron, Rainbow Six: Raven Shield and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory for FPS. HD2 is based on the second world war, but the game is pretty easy even on "very hard" -setting after a while, but I've had a great time playing it in LAN parties. You need Sabre Squadron to play it in co-op mode.
Raven Shield is one of the Rainbow Six series, so you'll play as a swat team member. Splinter Cell is really good, but limited to two players in co-op mode. The levels are designed for two players and can't be achieved alone (like for example, you might have to boost your friend on a roof). You also might want to check out if the newer Rainbow Sixes/Splinter Cells have co-op modes as well.
For some reason when I installed Chaos Theory my anti-virus program started whining about a virus, but I wouldn't worry about it. As far as I'm concerned, it shouldn't contain anything harmful (yes, it was a real copy of the game).
I don't know any newer/better FPS games than those two, but there is a few RPG's that I would recommend for you to try: Silverfall, Diablo 2: LoD (only between friends, IMO the internet community sucks. SOJ PLZ!) and Neverwinter Nights + the expansion packs. I think NWN2 has a multiplayer option as well, but I've never really tried it.
Here's some external information of the games above:
.. No wait, I'm not allowed to post links.

Alright, well, you'll just have to find it out yourself. I really recommend for checking out Silverfall, it's a little buggy but the story and the world is great.
Have fun!

Hello,
thanks for your reply. I've leaned more towards Splinter cell.
With Splinter cell, can you set up a lan game too play on?
