First of all I know this thread carries similiarities to other threads in this section (Like "PSP or DS?" etc.) but this is a little more egoistic thread (:P) where I want you to point out the good and bad things with a DS and good and bad things with a PSP.

I am really interested in buying a PSP or a DS. But I am kind of stuck in the middle with the DS in the left hand and the PSP in the right hand not being able to choose.

You'll understand my crossroad better if you read the below.

Nintendo DS:
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Kingdom Hearts (Part of an upcoming trilogy)
Final Fantasy III (Remake of Nintendo version)
Final Fantasy IV (Remake of Super Nintendo version)

PSP:
Final Fantasy: Before Crisis
Kingdom Hearts (Part of an upcoming trilogy)
Bleach: Heat the Soul series

In short I would kinda need both... but I am wondering which one I should get first?

Obviously, you are a massive RPG fan....in which case, i would opt for the Nintendo DS. Here are the main reasons:

1. You've already listed more DS games than PSP games that you are after
2. The DS is well suited to this genre, with its dual touch screen
3. The DS is absolutely destroying the PSP in Japan, the home of RPGs, so all the best RPGs in future will be on DS Lite.
4. Although maybe too retro for your personal tastes....the DS can also play all the magnificent RPGs from the Gameboy Advance catalogue.
5. The DS doesn't suffer from loading times, where as the PSPs UMD format is slow.

Ultimately, if you've been reading all the threads, i am pro Nintendo, so this is no surprise. But the points above are reasonably valid without being "fanboyesque". The PSP is a decent bit of kit, but with a poor showing in Japan, I am not sure of its long term future with RPGs.

It depends, if you like RPG games more DS, if you like good games of all variety PSP , dont get the lite ds its awful, the normal one is better. PSP games are more action packed, than DS games are for kids, it depends on your age, you will grow outta DS quick

To the OP, i am at LEAST 10 years older than lightning, and i've not "grown out" of the DS, as its aimed at people of all ages. Lightning is a Sony fanboy who is in a minority of kids who feel insecure about playing games that don't have blood in them, and won't hear any criticism of his beloved PSP without resorting to insults and juvenile and innaccurate comments.

Lightning is absolutely correct about one thing though, for RPGs, the DS is superior. As for his comment about variety.....thats nonsense, as the DS has far more games being made for it than the PSP, because the DS is a success story, where as nobody is buying any PSP games.

Excellent! Well not really Only RPG fan, though I am leaning towards that genre yes.

1. True, but what about future Action games? Car games? Sports games? I am listing these games as games I have priority to get of course. But what will I have until these games are released? Any tips? I am a gamer after all, I play Fifa, Tekken, Final Fantasy, Fire Warrior (shoot em up), just putting up these as examples.

Is there going to be a Super Smash Bros on DS?
Zelda?
Any good sports/car games? (Mario sports/car games is not an interest)

2. Don't know anything about it. But sounds good enough ^^

3. Hmm seems true enough.

4. Not at all retro ^^ I love retro games. Seeing as all my favorite games are retro ^^

5. That sounds annoying though :/ with the PSP that is.

You have many good points. Though I can clearly see an influence of Nintendo in you just as you say :p I would like a neutral opinion before I can ease my mind...

The only thing I can do know is base my thoughts on knowledge of the past and the history of Sony as well as Nintendo:

Games for playstation tend to come in masses, there is usually tons and tons, a variaty that I can look at. Nintendo usually have a few good series that you stick too. And as I researched about games I saw that Sony has more to deliver to me now, and DS got more in the future. And my little sister do have a Nintendo DS but I am uncertain if I should get my own or borrow hers ^^ it feels cheap somehow. I am no where near a rich kid, but it would be more cool to have my own.

On another topic, what is the multiplayer functions of the DS and the PSP? I have heard that the PSP can connect to others and play with them, even if you do not have the game they are playing. I have no idea how it works with the DS. The same way? I hope not because that will make my decision even more difficult ^^

1. DS games are vast and varied. Lots of different titles to get your teeth into whilst you wait for your RPGs to be released, and lots of different games that utilise the touch screen and two screens. I was playing Sim City DS recently, and thats a great DS remake making use of the DS Lites features.

2. Zelda Phantom Hourglass has been out in Japan for a bit, and is being translated now. Famitsu, a really established and respected games mag gave it 39/40! The game is going to be stunning. As for racing, sports games, yea, there are plenty of games like Pro Evo, Fifa etc on the DS.

3. & 4. Good :) I love retro games, and i've been buying a fair few GBA titles recently, and the GBA is essentially a portable SNES, but slightly more powerful, so this is fantastic!

5. Yea, loading times can be a pain, and whilst it loads, it uses up valuable battery life. The PSP slim was mean't to improve matters, but after seeing it in action, its done very little on most existing games, and in some cases the loading times are longer! I've heard newer games may improve though.

Multiplayer on the DS with one game pak is extremely common and very very easy. One mate has the game, the others connect up wirelessly, and you're away! With the PSP, it is now possible to do the same, although its not what Sony want, and therefore you have to download a hack, and have older firmware on the PSP to make this work. The DS however embraces this kind of multiplayer gaming.

Yes, with a name like "Nintengod", i am sure you're thinking i am bias, and perhaps i am to an extent....however, i do happen to own an PS1, PS2, Xbox and Dreamcast. Plus you only need to read reviews on games and see how well the DS is performing against the PSP to see why Nintendo have such a massive hit on their hands, an why the PSP has effectively been the turning point in Sony's demise. The PS3 is going through the same rough ride.

I believe that the psp games will last longer and will have better graphics.

Ok, so PSP games have better graphics - big deal. The Xbox had better graphics than the PS2, the N64 had better graphics than the PS1....doesn't mean they're better. With "better graphics" comes less battery life though....the original poster wants a handheld games console, not an inferior PS2 on a tiny screen and long loading times.

As for your point about PSP games "lasting longer" - prove it. The first games i got on the DS was Mario 64 DS....150 Power Stars to get takes a long time.

To Maskedmann, unfortunately for you, this thread has only been answered by people with bias towards either PSP or DS. However, i am the only one who hasn't come up with ridiculous claims and clouded by fanboy "judgement". I have stated facts.

Software support on the PSP has been dwindling now for 18 months. People aren't making games for it like they used to, as people aren't buying the games. This has to be a concern for anyone buying the console. Also, Sony are in financial difficulty - making huge losses. I can either see this being their first and last handheld games console....or a very rushed sequel soon. The DS is selling in silly amounts, Nintendo won't make a new DS for absolutely years now.

Point taken Nintengod, and you should just ignore people with comments like that! (The one you quoted) Seeing as he did not read my posts fully and understood what I am looking for.

And you are true about the facts that you are the only one that has posted truthfully (with a Nintendo twist ;)). Actually though.. I have been researching around the network and found plenty of good PSP games that I am starting to highly look forward too. Unfortunately (almost) same games are going to come/exist for the DS. Guilty Gear for both of them. Samurai Warriors on PSP, Dynasty Warriors on DS. Etc. etc.

PSP = Battlefield 2
DS = Metroid (Shoot em up version)

PSP = Tales of the World, Tales of Eternia
DS = Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy IV

PSP = Castlevania - The Dracula X Chronicles
DS = Castlevania - Portrait of Ruin

Of course all with their (probably) unique story and all. Which is why the decision is hard to make T_T

Damn you Nintendo and Sony! Making (almost) same games for different consoles! It's annoying.

Just buy both! lol. :D

Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is in all likelyhood the greatest handheld console game of this generation. The touch screen controls is mean't to be absolutely dreamy, and I can't wait for October when its released!

To be honest, when both consoles were first released, I thought the PSP looked like the better option. Things like the dual touch screen looked like a gimmick....but by the time the DS Lite came out, for me, there was only one handheld worth getting, and Nintendo will always have that magic touch for games.

Both have multiplayer and PSP u can connect your wireless to u cannot do nothing like that on DS

PS2 Spinoffs are better than the cr*p ou get on DS

What?!?!? Do you ever realise what you post?! It's nonsense.

The Multiplayer system on the DS is far easier, as anyone with a DS would understand. You only need one cart, and you can wirelessly link to another DS and download the software and you're away. The PSP you NEED a hack and an earlier firmware version to have a chance of multiplayer with only one game cart.

Please try to get your facts right....

OK, its my turn to come up with a made up load of tosh about the PSP, since lightning has been lying about the DS for weeks now!!

The PSP has been proven to cause leprosy.....no one knows why, but Sony have explained that its only after extensive use, and nobody uses their PSP long enough to get it.

I did not tell you? I am a gamer. I play all kinds of games, everything from bloody shoot em ups (such as F.E.A.R) to lovely The Sims ^^

And the only good Mario Kart (EVER) is Super Nintendo Mario Kart. The rest has become too much in my opinion. Good old fashioned Mario Kart was gulliable and had a place in my heart. The other ones, naah... though I respect your opinion ^^ Need For Speed, Ridge Racer, Gran Turismo, classical "realistic" racing games. (F1 O.o I'm sorry Lightning... but I'd rather be bored by something else)

The only unrealistic racing games I do love is Mario Kart (as previously stated) and Crash Team Racing (The first one for PlayStation, which clearly is nothing but a rip off of Mario Kart but yet it holds its own charm).

And Metroid Prime seems really cool actually. But I will discuss the DS more with you Nintengod when I have both a PSP and a DS. Then we can sit down with a cup of tea and chat about the fun games of DS etc. etc. ^^ this thread should be closed now (in my opinion) as people are far off topic and are not really helping anymore. Except Nintengod, thank you again.

I agree about mario kart to a degree....Super Mario Kart on the SNES is a truly awesome game, with a playability out of this world, and even to this day it still looks fresh......however, Mario Kart 64 was pretty crap, Mario Kart Double Dash on the Gamecube was very average, and the GBA version was nothing special either.....BUT......Mario Kart DS is truly brilliant, its as good as the SNES version in many ways, and with far more features. It plays as well, looks better, has more options, and even has some of the old circuits back.

No problems by the way - happy to help! :)
