Bomberman DS - Nintendo DS (released June 2005)
I recently picked this game up second hand for £14 so thought it might be a nice idea to review this gem.
I've always loved the Super Bomberman series on the SNES, so assumed Bomberman DS would be more of the same. Actually, its far more than that. Graphically and in terms of presentation it IS pretty much as you'd expect, functional and in reality no different to the SNES version. However, this simplicity is what makes the series so great. It builds on the previous games by offering now up to EIGHT players, and the beauty of it being on the DS is that it can now span into two screens!
Same rules apply though....the idea is to blow everyone and everything up in the alloted time. You get your typical power ups, with the classic detonator bombs, mines, and some new features like the skull bomb which means the blast can go round bends. New feature to the DS is that you can voice activate a bomb via the DS's mic, which is a really neat addition.
The multiplayer feature is fantastic as you would expect, as one cartridge can deliver 8-player gaming over 8 DS's via download play. The only downside is lack of on-line capability - but its far more fun to see your victims squirm in the same room, than some random person in Italy who will probably only disconnect anyway when he is in a losing position!
On the one player front, its actually more interesting than I thought it would be. I always associated Bomberman with multiplayer, but the one player mode is actually reasonably addictive and challenging. I am about halfway through the game so far, and it offers a decent enough challenge. So this is easily the best single playered Bomberman game I have experienced.
To summarise, if you LOVED Bomberman, then you will fall in love again with Bomberman DS and it vastly improves on the 1-player game. Likewise, if you found it not to your taste, then this is unlikely to win you over, despite some nice new features and utilising the DS's hardware. Those who dislike the Bomberman games need to see the light though!
Score : 8/10
