Super Mario Kart - Super Nintendo (Released 1992)

I have just reviewed Mario Kart 64.....but lets not talk about that game anymore, as THIS is the definitive version of the Mario Kart series!

Put simply, this is one of the greatest gaming experiences ever made. Nintendo's magician Shigeru Miyamoto created this game, and it shows.....(psst, he didn't make the sequel, so he is still a genius).

The game consists of 8 characters racing against each other in karts for supremacy of the track : Mario, Luigi, Princess, Yoshi, Bowser, Donkey Kong, Toad and Kooper Trooper. Based on weight and other characteristics, there are 4 different types of drivers - Mario and Luigi are all rounders in that they handle well, have reasonable acceleration and good top speed. On the other side you have the heavyweights of Bowser and DK who have the slowest acceleration and can be hard to control, but their top speed is unmatched. Koopa Trooper and Toad are great for beginners, as they have decent acceleration, handle really well, and only really struggle for top speed. Yoshi and Princess.....well I don't know why anyone would choose them, certainly not in race conditions!!

Everything about this game, you probably already know. The tracks are amazing - Mario Circuit 1, and Ghost Valley 1.....how many of us have spent such a great deal of time with Donkey Kong and Bowser trying to bring down our fastest times?! It could drive you absolutely up the wall as you had to nail it perfectly, otherwise you would have to start again....but this was what brought you back for that "one more go".

Graphically I love it. It looks so cartoony and runs so smoothly and rapidly, you can hardly fault it. The game also caters magnificently for two players, with battle arena's do out"shell" each other by bursting the balloons, and of course you can challenge each other to the drivers title in 4 championships, bringing the track total up to an impressive 20.

There really is little else to add to this. The game is spot on, it handles like a dream, looks great, is probably the most addictive game ever made and one of the best two player games ever. Nintendo need to add this on to their Virtual Console line up for all those who have never had the opportunity to play this incredible karting experience. PERFECT 10 for this baby.

Score : 10/10

Seems as though Mario Kart 64 is just a remake, and then they remade that on DS, its sad they have no new ideas

Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart 64 are not the same thing at all. Mario Kart DS is actually a really really great game, and I'd probably score it a 9. Mario Kart 64 for me is the real dunce in the family.

To me though, they are all racing games with the same basic characters, not much interest here

Well now you do! :p If you have a Wii.....do try to get it on Virtual Console (when it finally comes out, which it surely will), along with the proper classic controller.

Two key things : Gameplay and fun. This has both in bucketloads. People who had a SNES in the early 1990s will remember this fondly, and often still play it. This for me is the most played videogame ever.

Course you can play this on emulation, as I said in the other thread, but this game was designed for the SNES pad, plus it has a few glitches which are annoying. I own a SNES, and I also own a SNES USB adaptor, so even on emulation, I can use the SNES pad.

I wouldn't compromise what is one of the best ever videogames by downloading a buggy version, and use either keyboard, or cheap controller with it. The VC version will be great, and the classic controller will be up to the task.

Yea, you can buy a SNES USB adaptor, which means you can then plug in your old SNES pad, and then you have the ultimate emulated experience. It costs around £10 for the device.

Possibly it could be shipped there. Do a search for "Super Smartjoy SNES USB"
