Windows XP, because that's what my university uses.
Occasionally I use Linux, but only because I can use Windows connect to the uni computers running Linux and run their software remotely without having to put it on my machine at home It's all very clever :)

So I'm running a Quinboot system at the moment. But I'm signed into WinXP SP2 at the moment.
- WinXP Pro SP2
- Win2k Pro SP4
- Win98 SE USP*
- Ubuntu Linux 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
- OpenSUSE 10.3 (KDE3)

Also got VMware Server working with a couple of other OS that I don't really use as much. I got Mac OS X, DOS 6.22/Win 3.11, Solaris 10 and Win95 in VMs.

Im using 98, but geting a XP in the future. For a 98 it runs as good as a new one, but isnt atractive (in looks). Its kind of like one of those girls in your class that is super smart, but is as ugly as dirt. So basicaly its not the software its how updated in looks and smoothness. i want a flat screen as a monitor, because my computer is up against the wall. and it does'nt look good with it sticking out 3 feet from the wall. You get my point though.

I actually liked Windows 98, because of all the old DOS games that I used to play.
One of my all time favourite games is actually a DOS game.
Has anyone heard of Crusader: No Remorse?
But I guess I like Windows XP, because it has more security then what Windows 98 used to have. :)
Inferno Strike
11-18-2007, 04:33 AM
I do agree with you there. It does have more security, but I have not had problems with that so far. I have had mine for about 3 years and have never had problems with it rather that what i said in my last post, which was talking about the size and visual looks prodlems. I'm probably going to have a time getting my coming up new computer to be like my old one. ai should'nt have a problem getting all te old files and documents from my old computer on to my new one since i've done it so many times.

I just prefer using Win2k for somethings, I keep all my major apps like Photoshop, Dreamweaver, VMware, etc. off my WinXP system to keep it from slowing down. I mainly use XP for gaming and 98 for retro apps and DOS games.
XP SP3 looks exciting, but nothing beats Linux.

I've been stuck using Windows XP and it sucks. It's always got issues and I'm always sending "error reports" to Microsoft or whoever. It's just so buggy and imperfect, and perfection is what I'd like from my operating system. My brother says his Mac never has any problems at all. I guess it doesn't matter too much though...XP gets the job done with only a few headaches.

Vista is rubbish because it is taking time to sort out all the bugs. In time Vista should be the main OS.
My PC runs on 2000, because it's one of my dad's old office computers from his work. Even worse the graphics card has no memory and isn't even 3D enabled so I can't play any games on it. :(

That's the problem with Linux - if something doesn't work then it's a real task to get it working.
I like using Linux on the university machines where they have a load of techies who can make things work - but even they coudn't get my USB pen to work on our distro.

Webster Returns
12-10-2007, 04:50 AM
Linux is a group of Operating Systems based on the UNIX Kernel developed by Linus Torvalds, and protected under the GNU Open Source project. Which means, you can get most distributions of linux for free.
XP on the other hand is coded in C++, and uses a more complex Hybrid Kernel to do work. Its also gonna cost a pretty penny. However, XP does have native support of most tech things, and its not gonna take you forever to get something off of a thumb drive and working (In most average Joe situations).

Back to the Original Thread. I have many computers and over those computers, they have almost OS listed. I went with Mac because thats what im using right now. However, my other OS include XP Pro, Vista Ultimate, I have 3 Macs with Tiger, Leopard, and Tiger across them all, Windows 98, Ubuntu 7.10, Xandros, and PCLinuxOS2007. I think that just about covers it.

yeah, well i wouldn't want a comp with a laggy vista. If you are a techie who knows how to use a computer then use Vista, if you aren't stick with XP it's simple and you wont have to deal with the setup. (probably already on your Comp.)

I've heard that there are quite a few games that aren't completely compatible with Vista. But I still think Vista is worth getting, coz Vista will take over from XP sooner or later anyway.
I'm sure if you do run into compatibility issues with some games on Vista, there must be some solution to get around it if you search the internet.

Microsoft does the same thing with all its operating systems.
When it brings a new one out, it's useless. But then people use it, find bugs, report them and they get fixed. Eventually, the hardware gets fast enough to run it, and all the hardware that it didn't work with becomes obsolete. Then people forget that it was useless to start with and just use it.
It happened with XP and will do the same with Vista.
The way around it is to ignore the latest version of Windows until it's about 3 years old and has a couple of service packs.
Arrk-Mancer
02-10-2008, 06:03 PM
Microsoft don't care about bugs or any of that they just hide them under a sheet of pixels which can't be removed but those bugs pop-up and annoy people in between games mainly.
Microsoft and Electronic Arts are the same in so many ways.

XP is fine as an OS. I think a lot of people who think that XP is crap, are people who can't be bothered to optimize their XP's performance. They seem to go on about crashes, but after using it for several years, I haven't run into many crashes.
Also, ppl who go on to say that Macs don't ever get viruses - I disagree with them. Mac OS isn't as hugely popular as XP, so you'd expect idiots who program viruses to target XP. Anyway, it's quite difficult to get viruses on XP unless you're very reckless with what you do on the internet, e.g. opening emails from unknown senders, going onto dodgy porn sites and downloading random things from unknown sites.

There is nothing wrong with vista really it just people can't afford it so they so its crap ;) This statement is utter bollocks. I could afford it so i purchased a copy. Vista Home Premium, which set me back £150 (about $300) and i have to say it was a big mistake. When one program crashes the whole system freezes until it can sort itself out. Most of the programs i use regularly had "compatability problems" even Windows Live Messenger! WTF!?
Long story short, about a month after having Vista installed on my Vista Capable Laptop it dies.. Wont start up, nothing. Send it to get repaired, it comes back with XP on it. I chose not to re install ****e Vista and i've not had one problem since, oh and all of the programs i install work! now this shouldn't be such an amazing thing but Vista puts things into a perspective for you  utter toss OS

This statement is utter bollocks.
I chose not to re install ****e Vista and i've not had one problem since, oh and all of the programs i install work! now this shouldn't be such an amazing thing but Vista puts things into a perspective for you  utter toss OS
perhaps u might want to get a better specs unit.. i dont know, everything turns out well for me.. except the internet explorer 7, wc i seldom use.
Windows XP is more than good enough. All Vista offers is "shiny things" which aren't neccesary at all.
I'm using XP, I'm not getting Vista.
I'm using XP, I'm not getting Vista. A wise choice. Getting Vista is more like a downgrade than an upgrade.

i read an article from gamespot which showed results comparing XP sp2 with Vista SP1. Although XP is slightly better in some games than Vista, it is also the same the other way round.
Overall, XP outperforms Vista by a bit but Vista is gradually improving. I think in a few years time, Vista will become the next most popular OS, replacing XP.

All of these people who are saying "vista is crap" have mostly never bought it or have upgraded on to it. The fact is never saying something is bad before trying it yourself another thing is if you upgrade to vista from xp of course its not going to work since the files are all old the best way with vista to get best results is to buy a new computer with it already installed this has made my life easier.

I found this post in here among the others and I don't want to seem like I am nit-piciking, but I think having correct information is important when dealing with computers and operating systems.
Linux is a group of Operating Systems based on the UNIX Kernel developed by Linus Torvalds, and protected under the GNU Open Source project. Which means, you can get most distributions of linux for free.
Good observation but not entirely correct. Linux is not a UNIX kernel but a UNIX-like kernel. The difference being that UNIX is proprietary and owned by AT&T. Linux is just a kernel even though Mr. Torvalds loves the fact that some people in the open source and free software community get it wrong. Therefore, Linux isn't actually an OS but a part of an OS. The common "Linux OS" actually consists of an OS created by Richard Stallman and the GNU project. The GNU project (also known as the Free Software Foundation) was an attempt to create a totally free OS (free as in freedom to copy, distribute, and change at the users will) and they had succeeded with all parts except the kernel. The GNU kernel (called The Herd) was a complex and buggy design. It so happened that Linus Torvalds had developed his own UNIX-like kernel and released it under the GPL license. It was written using C and compiles using the GCC compiler (another part of the original GNU system) making it compatible with GNU. People used it as the missing kernel in the GNU system. So much so that the lines got blurred and because Stallman kept such a low profile at the time with his work....It has become mistakingly known as "Linux the OS" instead of "Linux the Kernel". There has been a great deal of controversy surrounding the misconception that the OS be called Linux ever since. The Linux kernel actually wasn't part of the Open Source movement or the Free Software Foundation even though Linus used the Free Software Foundation's GPL license. Remember also, that though similar in their philosophies, the Open Source movement and the Free Software movement are two different camps. There is a good bit of infighting between the two also. So to correct you on a slight error, there is no "GNU Open Source project" as GNU and Open source (although technically compatible) are two different things.
XP on the other hand is coded in C++, and uses a more complex Hybrid Kernel to do work.
Once again not completely true. The base code of Windows is also written in C (most operating systems are written in C for it's speed and low level memory handling abilities) but because it is released only in binary form cannot be modified or recompiled to be compatible with the GCC flavor of C applications. Theoretically, If a programmer had access to Windows' source code, parts of it could be recompiled to run under Linux or other OS's written in C. The Windows kernel is a hybrid kernel, but hybrid is not the name. It is simply known as the windows kernel. So you aren't too far off base. There are two Kernel design paradigms; monolithic and microkernel. A monolithic kernel is a kernel that is only one large program. It cannot be split or divided. A microkernel is a kernel that is made of modules. Different functions consist of different program modules that communicate with each other to perform their function as one program. Windows' kernel is referred to as a hybrid kernel because it is a mixture of both.
However, XP does have native support of most tech things, and its not gonna take you forever to get something off of a thumb drive and working (In most average Joe situations).
This is actually one of the pit-falls of proprietary software and Microsoft's monopoly. The reason more devices work with Windows is because vendors write more drivers for windows. A lot of vendors ignore Linux and MAC and don't waste development time and money on drivers. There belief is that being Windows has most of the market share for desktops they will still make their money. Linux is often blamed for its crappy hardware support when most of the time this is not the fault of the Linux/GNU platform but the fault of hardware vendors not writing drivers.
One of the pit-falls of totally free Linux/GNU distros that also affects Hardware compatibility is that they choose to be completely "FSF" compliant. In other words, all software on their systems must have available source code. They don't include binary only drivers with their distros because it goes against their philosophy. A lot of vendors that do support Linux with drivers often don't release the source because they have trade secrets to protect. This is where that difference I mentioned before about Open Source vs Free Software comes in. The Open Source camp believes that free (as in freedom remember not price) and proprietary software should co-exist. The Free Software Foundation believes that all software should be open and free to modify. Ubuntu is an example of a Distro that wants to be totally free. You can add binary only software to it yourself, but including it with the distro goes against their philosophy. A lot of hardware with binary only drivers will not work "out of the box"
I hope I didn't come off as a bigger know-it-all then I already am and though you were a bit off on a few things you still seem to have a good understanding of these things.

We got a new computer about a month and a half ago. It works great, good specs, good price too. There is only one problem with it.
WINDOWS VISTA!!!
Seriously, having used Windows 2000 (office edition) with my previous PC, I think it is better than Vista. So far all the improvements I have found are silly little things (style of the outside of the windows is the best one - honestly  ) and there are so many things that are either incompatible or changed for the worse. If you have ever used an older version of Microsoft Office for a long time, then tried using Office 2007, you will know what I mean. For the first time in my life, I had to use Help to do things. About 16 times. Hell, it even took me ages to find Help, because it was this really tiny button in the corner of the screen.
To summarise: New computer=good, New OS=BAD.

well ive now decided to switch/ convert completely to vista ultimate 64 bit.
I decided to give it a good few weeks of just using it and not xp and after getting used to all the little quirks and turning off the hidden admin thingy and tweaking the settings to how i like it, i can say i actually prefer it now, its still slightly slower than xp ive only noticed this on FPS test on my graphic cards pc pitstop scored my cards @ 446fps on xp and 386 on vista and thats the only difference tbh, ok it uses some more ram for all the extra features to run, but when your rig is holding 8 gig of ram, who cares !! its still not making any impact as i still have soooooo much unused ram (no one needs 8 gig but some of us like to max out our mbo's thats all lol.
Punkster is correct when he said vista is just the natual progression or next step in operating systems, everyone absolutly hated xp when it first arrived also.
so in summery, yes i love xp and have had great times with it, but its ageing now and times move on for the next generation, the new and more powerfull rigs some of us have or have built for ourselves im guessing loves the vista OS, but for the less powerfull or older rigs, xp reigns supreme.

Despite using Vista for a couple of months now, I am still not liking the changes. Admittedly there are some features that I think are better, but overall I do not like the style of Vista compared to other Windows versions. However, I have never used XP before, so I have jumped from 2000 to Vista, so it could take me more time to adjust.

The survey says - wrong answer. (At least the first part anyways :D )
Vista doesn't take great advantage of hardware, its slow and takes longer to respond. Plus it works like crap with games. I bought a laptop with Vista, and if I remove it and install XP, it would void the warranty, so in the end I had to dual boot it, which to be honest is unnecessary trouble (installing XP after Vista can be done, but it's a pain in the ass)
Not to mention quite a lot of driver problems for those using older hardware, like older Parallel printers and Dial-up modems. AND THEY'VE DROPPED GAMEPORT SUPPORT. (Quite unnecessary - since I've got two boxes full of Gameport controllers, which can't be used on Vista)
I like XP for it's security and overall compatibility. So many people use it. I even use it triple booted on my Macbook with Mac OS X and Linux.

Unfortunately I bought my PC when Vista was first released. It's okay at some things and I believe it has some cool features but before I upgraded my ram, it was so slow I couldn't get anything done. When I bought my PC many of them were coming with 512MB of ram, now I think they are realizing you just can't get a good experience out of 512MB because I looked at some PCs not long ago, and all the 512MB models are gone they mostly just sell 1GB and over models now. No seriously, don't update to Vista at all. Even with your new PC upgrade. I'm forced to run Vista on the laptop I'm using (warranty void if replaced with XP ) - and though it does most things I want it to (most), the computer would run so much faster, and wouldn't complain half as much if it was running XP. Thing is with Linux is it's completely different to Windows. If you try to run Linux like you run Windows it's going to result in epic fail.
For example, one mistake I made when switching to Linux, was trying to find programs for it online. Now, I feel like a complete spazstick. Since all I had to do was open the Synaptic Program Manager.
Plus another thing that confuses newbies to Linux is the Filesystem. Since you don't have a standard "my computer" where you can just click your C drive. In Linux it's just a little more complex.
Ah well, GNOME users have a "Computer" feature anyway. Ubuntu is brilliant for newbies. Unfortunately I was stupid and chose SUSE Linux as my first distro.

Who doesn't hate it.
Someday I will destroy Windows Vista (if it is actually possible to assassinate and Operating System).

Incompatibility. Nearly everything that is even remotely old will probably not work with Vista.

That's the magic of VMware and other virtualization software. Get XP, 98, etc. to run in a virtual PC, so you can run your old apps. Unfortunately no graphic card forwarding, so you can't run older games on a virtual pc.

I use Vista 32bit on a 64bit x2 core processor - didnt trust 64bit Vista due to driver issues etc so stuck with 32bit version. I also use Ubuntu at work - very good for development.
But I bought a 2GB upgrade for my Vista machine a few days ago to take it to 4G, and didnt realise that 32bit Vista will only recognise a max of 3G (or 3.5G if you're lucky) unless your motherboard supports some funky special memory remapping. So, I bought 64bit Vista - works a treat and can see the 4G now. But COD4 won't install on my 64Bit system :(

Yeah, but thats no where near as bad as downloading a game via Steam.

It's a shame you use Vista.
Windows 1.0? Are you sure? That stupid pile of crap is completely useless - to be honest, you're better off in pure DOS - if you're going to use a Windows 3x system, use 3.11 WFW - it's much better (especially with Calmira II) and if you use the newer TCP/IP buffers as well as the 32bit extensions, you can run programs like Mozilla Firefox no problem.
Still - the only OS I would recommend apart from OS X and Linux is WinXP. Nothing else. Not even 98SE. That's only good for nostalgia, and not real computing.
@ Solidsteel, I'm not saying downloading using Steam is slow - since it is actually very fast - but I'm simply saying Steam is crap. Since it hogs RAM and forces your computer to be connected to the Internet and running Steam, to play a VALVe or Steam-Powered game.

I use Vista on my desktop PC and XP on my laptop. Vista seems to be a decent OS, though takes some getting use to and there are still games that arent compatible with it. :( Thank God for compatability mode.

Vista on the computer I use most. I hate it. I want my good old XP back.
I remember when vista came out some place, they took it back after a few days and re-released it after a week. Before: 104 system failures. After: 107 system failures. (unsure about the exact number, I just remember it was given out again with 3 more)

Vista now seeing as my XP PC died thanks to a big bug
Mended the XP PC but prefer the format for standard games included on the PC with Vista. preferred XP though as an OS though so that is still used in the main. This may be as I have Office 2000 and it won't work on Vista and I use my Office Suite a lot. I am not keen on forking out for another Office Suite for Vista.

If you really must have it - dualboot Windows XP.

Here in Australia, all schools use Mac computers. I swear they get on my nerves sometimes. Honestly about 95% of my school use Windows XP and nobody knows anything about Macs except the fact that there more annoying then Windows computers.

They can be if you don't know how to use them - once you learn how to fully use a Mac they become a dream to work with.
As for choosing Home or Pro, just go Pro. It includes a lot more random features which hardly do anything, but Pro can do anything that Home can do better anyway.
