    My cd dive doesn't work.

I bought a new laptop a few months ago, it's a Toshiba something. Anyway, the disk cdrive has never worked. I put a disk in and nothing happens.

Do i have to install it or something?

I threw the box and instructions out, so don't tell me to read them.

My girlfriends laptop has the same issue....it can't read CD-ROMs. It can however read DVDs....so we've just assumed that the CD laser is buggered.

The same could apply to yours OR it could be that you require the software driver installed for that particular CD-ROM. I am guessing though that if you can run DVDs but not CDs....then its the same issue as above.

    try cleaning the lens

Maybe worth a shot cleaning the lens as KKid says, although I tried that and it didn't work.

I ended up just using a spare external portable CDRom which I had lying about from work. This did the trick and isn't an ideal solution, but saves going back to the store plus I think her laptop was out of warranty by that time.

Cleaning the lens is a good idea and will probably make it work like new.

Now that's the spirit. You paid for the sht so you'd expect they'd clean it off before handing it to you.
