    Pieces of the Past

This is a piece of work I wrote for my GCSE English in school. Thoughts?

The road ahead of me stretched out around the corner. Recognition passed through my mind, but not my conscious self, leaving me wondering if the thought had been there at all, or if I was just entertaining a phantom of a dream. I glanced around my present surroundings, taking in as much detail as I could. Above me, the blazing afternoon sunlight filtered through the bronzed leaves of trees becoming heavy with their dying burden. Below my feet, the ground shimmered with the light, as the wind gently caused the leaves to waver and quiver. Apart from the wind’s gentle rustle upon the trees, everything was silent. I began to continue in the direction I had been heading for at first, before I felt something was amiss. Following the cracked, back-country road around a corner, I stopped to take in a whole new field of vision. As I turned the corner, the full extent of the wind was thrust upon me, moving as fast as a whip. The sunlight touched the damaged ground much easier here, as the trees were pruned back. It was then that my vision changed, and I lost sight of what had been…

He surveyed the dry plains and sand dunes that encompassed his entire view. The rank and file squads of soldiers were visible far out into the distance. His troops. Ready to fight for him, to die for him, their loved ones, and their country. The wind stirred, sending clouds of sand into the air. The air was hot and humid, and it was stifling for the young Pharaoh. Everything seemed to be blurred now, the dead heat rising from the dunes, obscuring his already hindered vision. He shielded his eyes with one heavily tanned hand, and tried to focus on a flash of light in the distance. His breathing became laboured as more flashes appeared. Finally, the enemy had made their advance. He stood firm, and raised an exquisite sword high into the air. Sunlight beamed from its tempered blade, as he pointed it dead straight ahead. A roar escaped his soldiers as they surged forward to assault the oncoming army. He turned, to follow his army. His last sight was that of a blade, just before it thrust through his windpipe…

As my mind snapped back to reality, I fell to my knees. What just happened? What was the vision that had just appeared before me? I shook my head, to try and find some clarity. I forced my legs to bear my weight, and stood up, shaking a little. I took in what happened, and tried to make sense of it, as I slowly followed the lane towards my destination. As I pushed on, I noticed the subtle changes that began to show themselves to me, that I had not noticed before. That I had not seen fit to notice before. Things that were to me about as worthy of my time as a passing insect. And yet now, I saw things differently. Surely that wasn’t a dream before? I needed time to make my mind up about it, and time was one commodity I was running out of quite quickly. I looked to the west, where the sun could be seen meandering slowly to leave me in the darkness of my thoughts and dreams. I increased my pace, and came to an iron gate set into a brick wall.

The wall felt warm to the touch, as if something inside it kept a fire burning, to lead its love home. Or of course, to lure the unsuspecting into its honey trap, to devour it piece by piece. Regardless of that thought, that now seemed to prey on my mind, I pushed the gate lightly. It swung open, letting off a hideously noisy creak, reminiscent of fingernails being scraped down a blackboard. Stepping past the gate, I found myself standing on a gravel pathway leading to a medium-sized cottage. The path itself was straight, and was kept in line by a small white fence, seemingly made of metal, painted white. The fence held an intricate design, in the same shape as the front gate had. As I pushed ahead, another vision assailed me…

His vision was blurred even moreso than before. His breath did not come as it should, as hot, sticky blood slowly seeped into his lungs. As his eyes closed for the last time, he heard the scrape of boots crossing sand, and saw a faint outline of two feet, walking away from him purposefully. The last sound he heard before taking his last gasp of breath was the wet slap, as a sword entered it’s scabbard, slick with the blood of its prey…

I shuddered as I once more returned to full consciousness. These were no dreams, they couldn’t be. It was too much for me to take in at that moment, so I decided to try and make sense of it at another point in time. For now, I had something to do. I reached the door to the house, with its light blue, peeling paint, and cracked window in the middle. It didn’t seem like the kind of house that she would live in… I pushed the door, and it opened without requiring a stronger touch. The faint smell of home cooking wafted out, and I stepped inside. The hallway was just as bland, and in similar disrepair as the front door was. I reached into my pocket, and cocked the pistol that was nestled there. Quietly, I pulled it free, just as a young woman entered the hall from a side door. She looked at me, smiling, and my eyes widened.
