Spectre. What a disappointment.
The film’s pre-title sequence is as devoid of suspense as it is beautifully shot. It’s probably the least exciting opening to a Bond film since Live and Let Die, but whearas that segued into Paul McArthy’s brilliant title track, Spectre drifts into the dreary ‘Writing’s On The Wall’.
So it really doesn't get off to a great start.
The film’s action sequences do pick up, though, and the new Q and M have really grown into their roles and added a lot. Dave Batista cut a formidable presence, instantly elevating him above any of the other henchmen Daniel Craig has faced.
Teehee, Oddjob, Zao, Stamper. A big part of the charm of Bond films before the reboot was the larger-than-life characters helping the villain put his plan into action. So it was great to see a renewed focus on this element.
The main problem with Spectre was that it also brought a renewed focus on humour - no doubt hoping to build on Skyfall. If the humour works, as it always did in Skyfall, that is not a problem. The issue is that it’s very hit-and-miss in Spectre and these scenes seem to come at the expense of the character moments that really made Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace so fantastic.
In QoS, when the hotel is burning, Bond puts his gun to Camille’s head and contemplated killing her - as 007 often did in the novels. The way he handled Mathis’ body and the particularly cruel way he dispatched of Greene were all throwbacks to the James Bond that Ian Fleming wrote about.
It’s a shame that Craig’s tenure started so strongly on this front only to abandon it. There was a definite need after Quantum of Solace it bring back some of the elements most loved about the first 20 Eon films, but Spectre takes it too far in the wrong direction.
I've hard mixed reviews on Spectre.
Honestly, I only really liked Casino Royale and thats because it was a bit different so felt fresh. The issue I have is the other Daniel Craig films since feel like if they didn't have the iconic bond theme slapped over the action sequences they could pretty much be any generic action film...or a Bourne movie.
Controversially my favourite Bond is Pierce Brosnan (but only in Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies). He's just in my head what I'd want a spy to be like and I love his delivery of both the name and the one liners. Daniel Craig is more gritty and visceral and I hear it is more like the books (never read them myself) but the last two films and from what I hear this fourth installment is just missing the Bond magic that we all know and love.
Ah well still got Star Wars soon I guess...
Last film I watched on a plane was TED 2 and surprisingly I really enjoyed it, it was funnier than expected. Worth a punt if you've had a couple of lager shandy's on a Friday![]()

For some reason I've been on a Disney marathon, as the Aladdin Blu-Ray recently came out which immediately led to Inside Out. No complaints to any of them, just sadness of being an adult.
Spectre - classic Bond - loved it!
Well, I was gonna watch Deadpool last night, even bough 3 tickets for myself, my fiance and her sister. However when we got to the theater there were no people there, so I decided to check the tickets on my phone to make sure I didn't get the time wrong. Well, the time was right, but the tickets were for a different theater. In a different city. 1 1/2 hour away. FML.
I did however just watch Chappie, and I really enjoyed it. Chappie himself is a delightful character, I really recommend watching it if you haven't already.

Deadpool's alright. I think if I was 12 I'd have enjoyed it a lot more than I did. Don't get me wrong, some of the humour is good, but it's just a bit too predictable and meh. The soundtrack's great, story's decent enough, though it'd probably be a bit better if there was more Deadpool actually in it.

I wasn't a fan. I think in there somewhere is a pretty cool Batman movie, but the entire thing just felt...messy. Unnecessarily so. Ben Affleck surprised me how good he was. Infact, all of the acting was pretty okay to great. Jeremy Irons and Henry Cavill done the best with what they had. Gal Gadot, too. But Zack Synder just can't make a good superhero movie. The fact he's had SO MANY chances to do it, and still can't is just frightening that he's doing the first Justice League movie.
That eMail scene (won't go into more detail as spoilers) is the absolute laziest scene I've ever seen in a movie. It's shocking.
If you've seen the trailer, you've pretty much seen the movie. 6/10
