    Hyrule Warriors

The latest Nintendo Direct has unveiled a new Wii U Zelda game, as well as eShop downloads NES Remix and Dr. Luigi.

The next Zelda game to be released on the Wii U won’t be the still-under-wraps mainline sequel but an unexpected new crossover with the Dynasty Warriors series.

Tecmo Koei’s controversial franchise does not generally sell or review well in the West but it’s still a huge draw in Japan, and that’s been enough for Nintendo to authorise a collaboration.

From the footage shown on Nintendo Direct it doesn’t seem as if it’s a crossover so much as a completely separate game set in the Zelda universe, much in the style of previous spin-offs such as Gundam Warriors and One Piece: Pirate Warriors.

The game has the tentative name of Hyrule Warriors and is due out at an unspecified point in 2014.

There were other new announcements for the Wii U but they were all for downloads, with Sonic: Lost World getting two free levels based on Nintendo franchises, with the first one being Yoshi’s Island – which is available today – and the second implied to be Zelda early next year.

Also available today is the Golf game for Wii Sports Club, which has the neat option of laying the GamePad on the floor so you can see the ball and club as you aim the remote. It also has a new course based on the old NES Golf game and a new 24 hour free trial.

NES Remix for the Wii U is also due to be released today and features strange new remixes of 16 early era NES games with, for example, Link appearing in Donkey Kong and ExciteBike having night races. There’s also a collection of 8-bit style stamps for Miiverse, much in the vein of Super Mario 3D World.

The final Wii U download is Dr. Luigi, a minor variation on puzzle game Dr. Mario that features a new game mode with L-shaped pills that make the Columns-style gameplay easier for newcomers. There’s also a new version of the Germ Buster play mode that you can play solely on the GamePad. Dr. Luigi is out on January 15 for Ł13.49.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was also briefly shown, reconfirming Cranky Kong as a playable character for anyone that missed him at VGX. The UK release date was also confirmed as February 21, the same week as North America.

Finally for the Wii U there were new trailers for both Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8. We at least found the first one very confusing, as it seemed to be implying that Kirby is going to be in Mario Kart, but it actually turned out to be an announcement that Rosalina and Luma from Super Mario Galaxy are a playable character in Super Smash Bros.

The Mario Kart 8 trailer showcased new tracks set in an airport and amongst the cloud tops, once again showing the game to be one of the most technically advanced on the Wii U.There was also talk of a new buggy type kart, although we’re not clear if it was actually in the trailer or not.

There were no brand new 3DS announcements, but Kirby: Triple Deluxe was looking pretty good, for a Kirby game, while Yoshi’s New Island still seem to be suffering from rather ugly art direction (which certainly didn’t look as good as the Sonic: Lost World level). Both games were confirmed for 2014 though.

Capcom’s Professor Layton Vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney got a specific launch date in Europe of March 28, which includes a retail release as well as just an eShop download.

Finally, there was an incentive to register your Nintendo Network ID on the 3DS, with anyone that does so getting a free copy of old Game Boy Color game Super Mario Bros. Deluxe If they do sign-up between now and January 31. Although the download won’t be available until February.

If you download the Pokémon Bank app any time between December 27 and September you’ll also get a free Celebi Pokémon, seemingly whether you’re just using the trail or paying the Ł4.49 annual fee

Saw that yesterday, while I like Legend of Zelda I've never been a fan of Dynasty Warriors so I doubt I would get this (if I had a Wii U which I don't).

Saw the trailer for this on instagram yesterday, i loved it! I can understand the upset for the Dynasty Warrior crossover but who cares?! It's Link! Killing things! Like always! Only this time, there's more things to kill!

I seriously don't like Dynasty Warriors, just something that despite both my brothers loving to bits, I always found extremely dull, so when I heard about this, whilst it did pique my interest a little, can't say it was something I felt like I needed to play.

On the opposite side of things, soooooo glad a European release date for Layton v Wright was announced, been waiting on this game for a long time, so it's nice when confirmation finally comes through.

Also been a pretty big fan of Rosalina, liked seeing her included into the new Smash Bros game, (well and Luma of course). Likewise to see a little more of Mario Kart 8, which is one of the few games that actually makes me seriously want a WiiU..... sadly of which there aren't a great deal just yet.

The Dynasty Warriors series has always been my guilty pleasure series. Great for when I am between games or just need to blow off steam without thinking to hard. I look forward to seeing how they manage this one.
