There's a rumor of a price drop with the 360console. The price will drop $100cuz of the new CPU i think. I will be pissed if this happens cuz i payed $399!!! but anyways, if this rumor is true, this will take effect around the beginning of next year i believe.
You could buy the core, but i dont recommend it because you're gonna eventually have to buy a harddrive that costs ($100). AND the premium comes with a free headsetso really, between a premium and a core is, the headset
OHHHHH and one more thing about y u need to premium.... It has a chrome disc drive thingy
And finally to answer ur question, NO u dont need the harddrive to play online, but u DO need a broadband connection. I'd still recommend to buy a harddrive cuz the memory card that comes with the core console, will NOT be enough space for all the great games that are going to hypnotize u to buy.

ummm the rumor of the price going dwn for the 360 is true and yea they said the beginning of next year though i suggest that u guys by it before than....yea i know its more but i heard they are also salshing the memory storage if u buy it when the price goes down.

Yea I think you should get the primium pack and the games that came out with the 360 when it was released 'cause they'll probbly go down in price soon.

-Ethernet cable (i think it's like... 8-10ft??)
-extra HD cables
-1 free month of gold memebership (so u can play online)
-1 extra free headset(for live)
im not sure if i missed anything but that's pretty much it
if u bought a core, and u had to buy all those stuff^^ then u'd have to pay... about $150 more, which is $50 more than the retail of premium
